Checking the Time

The spiral staircase inside the large pyramid in Le Louvre is an interesting piece of architecture in itself. I’ve photographed it many times and from many different angles. I have photographs of people walking up or down, standing at the top and looking down and so on. It is usually quite easy to isolate an interesting subject; few people use those stairs, as most favor the escalators. The central part of the spiral is an open elevator. Fortunately, the elevator was lowered during my visit. I had just arrived inside the pyramid and thought I might be able to get a different type of composition this time. I looked down and saw this gentleman sitting at the bottom of the steps. My first reaction was to wait for him to move so I could photograph him in action instead of stationary, when suddenly, he turned his arm and looked at his watch. I had my gesture and my story. The old man is done with museum galleries for the day. He left his family and told them he’d rest awhile. He found a quiet space to wait, occasionally looking at the time and gathering the strength to walk to the next metro station. He is even considering taking a taxi if his wife allows the extra expense. He is tired and hungry, and the thought of bœuf bourguignon and a glass of red wine or two will help him make the extra steps necessary to leave the museum. He may even walk up the spiral stairs instead of fighting the crowds up the escalators.
